Slowing Down in the City: My Experience with The Offline Club in Barcelona

Paola

In a world that’s constantly on, it’s no surprise that more and more people are craving a pause—a break from screens, notifications, and the ever-present pressure to do more, faster. That’s exactly what drew me to The Offline Club in Barcelona on March 23rd for an evening of intentional disconnection and genuine human connection.

The event took place in the enchanting Alice Secret Garden, a magical hidden venue tucked away in the heart of the city. Think whimsical greenery, fairy lights, cozy corners, and a calming ambiance that instantly slows your breath and opens your heart. It felt like stepping into a storybook—quiet, inspiring, and beautifully in tune with the values of slow living.

What is The Offline Club?

The Offline Club is a global movement designed for people who want to take a break from their digital lives and reconnect—with themselves and with others. It’s not just a digital detox, it’s a return to presence. No phones. No laptops. Just mindful moments and real conversations.

Their events are beautifully aligned with slow living principles, which is exactly why I decided to attend. Slow living isn’t about doing everything slowly—it’s about doing things deliberately, mindfully, and with presence. And that’s exactly what The Offline Club facilitates.

A Slow and Intentional Sunday Morning

The event structure itself reflects a mindful pace. The first hour was devoted to quiet individual activities. People brought books, journals, sketchpads—you could feel the peaceful energy of focused individuals just being, not doing. I brought my book – that I never find the time to read – and enjoyed a full hour of reading, surrounded by others doing the same, or journaling or sketching. It was calming, grounding, and powerful.

There’s something incredible about doing nothing together. The collective energy of the group actually deepens the experience. You become accountable—not to others, but to yourself. It’s a gentle nudge that reminds you: You deserve this time.

After the quiet hour, the mood naturally shifted as we entered the social phase. Tables filled with board games, laughter, and meaningful conversations. There was no pressure to be “on,” no need to impress. Just people being human, curious, and open.

Bingo With a Twist

This particular evening featured a special “connection bingo”—and no, not the kind with numbers. Each square had a prompt like “Find someone who has a dog,” “An entrepreneur,” “Someone who just arrived in Barcelona,” or “A person who speaks three languages.” It was a brilliant way to spark conversations and break the ice. You’d be surprised how easy it is to meet almost everyone in the room when the goal is just to learn something about them.

What I loved most was how natural and joyful it all felt—like reconnecting with an old way of being that we’ve all missed without realizing it.

A Space That Invites Stillness

Of course, the experience wouldn’t have been the same without the magical setting of Alice Secret Garden. This venue isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. From the artful mix of plants and decor to the soothing lighting and bohemian charm, every corner whispers slow down. It’s the kind of space where creativity and calm coexist effortlessly—perfect for reflection, conversation, or simply sipping tea under twinkling lights.

Why You Should Try It

If you’ve been feeling the pull to unplug, to slow down, or to connect more deeply—with yourself or others—The Offline Club offers a safe, welcoming space to do just that.

You don’t need to be a meditation guru or a board game lover. All you need is the willingness to be present. To share space. To listen. To breathe. And maybe even to laugh.

In a city as vibrant and fast-paced as Barcelona, this kind of intentional pause is not just refreshing—it’s revolutionary.

Curious About Slow Living?

Attending this event reminded me why I embrace slow living in both my personal and professional life. It’s not about doing less. It’s about doing what matters—with intention.

So if you’re curious, craving connection, or just looking for a beautiful way to spend 2/3 hours that nourish your mind and soul, I highly recommend checking out The Offline Club.
